Highcliffe St Mark Primary School
Writing Vision Statement
At Highcliffe St Mark Primary School, we believe that every child can become a confident and capable writer, able to express their ideas clearly, creatively, and with purpose. Writing is a vital skill for learning and life, and our ambition is for all children to develop a love of writing that empowers them to communicate effectively with different audiences.
Our curriculum is designed around high-quality texts that inspire children to write for a wide range of purposes and audiences. Through studying these rich models of language, children learn about writing form, voice, and the structures and conventions of written language. Our carefully sequenced approach ensures that each child builds on what they already know, steadily developing their knowledge, skills, and confidence throughout their time with us. This progression is supported not only through the genres of writing we teach but also through daily retrieval activities that strengthen and deepen learning.
We recognise the importance of cross-curricular writing in allowing children the space to practise taught skills and apply their understanding of different purposes for writing. Embedding writing across subjects provides meaningful opportunities to communicate ideas in varied contexts while also reinforcing and extending learning in other areas of the curriculum.
We also recognise that handwriting and spelling are essential components of confident writing. Our school-based approach ensures that all children receive consistent, high-quality instruction in these areas, giving them the tools they need to write with fluency and accuracy. Alongside this, we place great importance on speaking and listening, encouraging children to use discussion to explore ideas, communicate clearly, and enhance their writing.
We value the vital role parents and carers play in supporting their child’s writing journey. By fostering a strong home–school partnership, we enable families to understand how writing is taught and how they can help children strengthen and apply these skills beyond the classroom.
Through this vision, we are committed to nurturing children who not only write with skill and imagination but who also see themselves as writers, confident, capable, and ready to share their ideas with the world.
