    French Vision Statement

At Highcliffe St Mark, we believe that learning a foreign language opens doors to new cultures, perspectives and opportunities. Through the teaching of French, we aim to develop pupils who understand the value of communication beyond their own language and who grow into culturally aware, globally minded individuals.

Our French curriculum is designed to be engaging, progressive and purposeful. Through a structured four-year programme using the Kapow scheme, pupils build secure knowledge in speaking, listening and writing. Learning is carefully sequenced so that each unit builds on previous knowledge and equips pupils with vocabulary and skills they can use in real-life contexts, including when visiting French-speaking countries.

Pupils begin with core topics such as greetings, numbers, colours, animals and transport. In Year 4, they extend their vocabulary into areas including clothing, food and months of the year. Year 5 deepens understanding through themes such as shopping in France, describing family and developing more detailed animal vocabulary. By Year 6, pupils apply their learning to topics such as sports, French towns and describing their home. Throughout their learning, children also develop an understanding of masculine and feminine nouns, enjoy a range of French songs and have opportunities to practise speaking in a supportive environment.

Across all year groups, our aim is for children to enjoy learning French, develop curiosity about other cultures and leave our school with a strong foundation for future language learning and a desire to explore the wider world.
